Gymnastics Life

Gymnastics has been a part of my life for over twelve years. As a Boston resident, I attend New England Sports Academy where I practice on the boy’s gymnastics team. Six days a week, four hours a day, I am in and out of the gym. I guess you could say it’s my home away from home.
Gymnastics is an excellent foundation for all other sports. It builds coordination, flexibility, strength, speed, self-esteem, confidence, and friendships. Each of these attributes can help excel you in any other activity. It is a great way of expressing yourself, through the motion of your body. Instead of talking about how you feel, you can show it by the way you move.
I took photos of my gym I go to, portraying the lives of many different gymnasts. I tried capturing the dedication these guys display while detaining the hard-working, yet fun aspect of the sport.

Ciao Bella

These photos were taken in the North End of Boston, which is known as the Italian neighborhood. It’s famous for its historical buildings and great food. On the night of December 12, 2010, it was raining and the temperature was dropping. Christmas lights lined the windows of shops and the once crowded streets during the daytime are now deserted, except for a few restaurants and bakeries. This collection documents the streets, shops, and lights of the North End.

The UNaverage: Curly Cakes

When the time came for me to identify a topic for this project, I thought about the concept of being average. I thought about my peers and the contrast between those who barely scratch the surface of their potential and those who so blatantly stand apart from the rest in terms of their personal successes. Then it dawned on me, why capture the average, when I could just as easily capture the exceptionally UNaverage? Isabelle English is a 17-year-old owner and proprietor of her own business. She juggles school, friends, and a brand new cupcake shop on lively Charles Street in Boston, all while maintaining a sense of grace and composure. She is, in and of herself, the opposite of average, and it is that which I hope to capture.

Determination

Many people who watch Sports, only see the final result of what takes place during games. However, for all these athletes, there is much more that goes into it. While each sport is only one season, individuals work year round to improve their strength and skills. In this story, we look at the determination of these athletes to improve themselves. We see athletes working extra hours and pushing their limits. We see the pain of injured players itching to return and the reward of success as the ball drops through the net.

Deckin’ The Halls

Nothing sparks excitement in the eyes of little boys and girls like the anticipation of Christmas. The joy the holiday season brings is made apparent by neon lights, Christmas trees, and even giant inflatable characters. People go to extreme lengths in some cases to decorate their houses and lawns in an effort to create an atmosphere as festive as possible. Suburban houses are often the most impressively lit and decorated, mostly due to the advantage in area they have over the apartments and lofts in the city. Driving though suburban neighbor hoods, the holiday spirit is apparent through the gleaming lights carefully lined on the gutters and figures of Santa and his reindeer on the lawns. These photos are a reflection of the effort put into these decorations and the expression they display.

Each year my best friend Carson and I make gingerbread houses together during the holiday season. For the past three years we have invited a different group of people to join in this tradition. This year we shared this experience with our friends Lexi and Taylor.
Each brought a piece of their personality to their project
Some silly, some creative, some more meticulous
Each executed their ideas with delicacy and precision
And each rewarded themselves with a taste of their hard work

For some, music is hobby, but for Lauren Fuller it’s life. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be a musician. She attends Berklee College of Music in Boston. For a day, we followed Lauren through her everyday life as a student at Berklee. Stories Through Photos
by sghole on December 13th, 2010 in Photography, Storytelling
In the first week of the photography studio, students looked behind the photographs to find and understand the stories that provoked the images. Here are some photos taken by the students of people, places, and events that left an impression on them.
