Passio Market
by Saeed on October 18th, 2010 in Film Fiction, Science Fiction
A story, trailer and process paper of the movie, “Passio Market,” created by Carli and Nora.
INSPIRATION
When Nora and I first got together to discuss ideas for our final project, Nora mentioned the concept of manipulating a fairytale to make it science fiction. This was surprising to me because I’d been thinking the same thing. As we delved deeper into our fairytale idea, we decided to also use a “Witness” story about international trafficking of women. After this, Nora remembered a movie called “Alice” on the channel “Syfy”; a futuresque, more twisted version of “Alice in Wonderland”. In this movie, the Mad Hatter owns a tea shop, where he sells emotions in the form of tea to the highest bidder. By combining these ideas, Nora and I came up with our main focus: to extract childrens’ souls, dissect all of the emotions and characteristics out of the souls, and sell them to the depressed adults of the world. We began to talk about what would happen to the children once their souls were gone, and we came up with the idea of using “Sleeping Pods” from the movie “Resident Evil”. Once we had all of the details, we chose the fairytale characters we would use; Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and Hansel and Gretel. All of these fairytales involve kidnapping of some form. Nora and I decided to convert Sleeping Beauty and Snow White into children so that all of the main characters from the fairytales could be related in some way. In addition, we combined our fairytale characters and a plot twist by introducing Reginae Ads, a generation that is generally faster and stronger in every aspect. We got the name Reginae Ads because that means “princess” in Latin. Finally, we came up with the title for our movie: “The Passio Market”. Passio means emotion in Latin, so fully translated our title is “The Market of Emotion”.

Influx
by Saeed on October 18th, 2010 in Film Fiction, Science Fiction
A story, trailor, and process paper of the movie “Influx”, created by Emilly and Abe.
INSPIRATION
What happens when reality and imagination collide? According to Influx a world can be destroyed. We began by brainstorming scenarios based on personal interests including the idea of an entire story taking place within one person’s imagination. We were both interested in how dreams work and how they affect us. This prompted us to look at a psychological story line. Our story was not one that was based off or created through facts because we wanted to focus on the mystery of things we acknowledge to be very real and present, but cannot see. A current problem that we did draw inspiration from was global warming. Influx has a lot to do with how human’s effect their environment and the self destructive nature that we have.

Counterfits
by Saeed on October 18th, 2010 in Film Fiction, Science Fiction
Here is the trailer and process paper of Carson and Jonathon from the Film Fiction studio for their movie titled “Counterfits.” The film delves into questions regarding a society filled with “designer babies,” babies whose DNA and genetic traits have been altered and pre-selected by their parents before birth.
INSPIRATION
Two years ago a family in Virginia went to a fertility clinic, and were able to choose the sex of their baby. Scientists are now saying within a couple of years, people will be able to pick and choose the genetic traits that go into a person. Parents will have the option to choose the looks and personality of their offspring. People predict in the future there will be segregation between the humans with normal DNA, and the humans with altered DNA. These facts inspired us to make a movie that will remind people to think before they take such a huge step in science.

“Advanced Placement”
by Saeed on October 18th, 2010 in Film Fiction, Science Fiction
Here is the trailer and story created by Joesph and Grace in the Film Fiction studio titled, “Advanced Placement.” The trailer was inspired by a video made by the activist group called “Witness” which portrayed the terrible realities of the juvenile prison system in California.
FACTS/INSPIRATIONS:
We were inspired by a video made by the activist group called Witness. Their video portrayed the terrible realities of the juvenile prison system in California. In the video we saw children our age being refused opportunities to learn and interact with others their age. These children, the majority of whom committed minor offenses were being treated like adult career criminals with no future. In the video we saw these children being more or less robbed of their childhoods which lead us the track that ended with this future we have created.
This is a link to the video.

In The Village
by Saeed on October 18th, 2010 in Film Fiction, Science Fiction
Here is the amazing story and the trailer of “In the Village” created by Natiah and Annie in the Film Fiction studio.
Abrafo and Arapmoi gather the children of the ‘paradise’ land together. Today Abrafo is going to tell them all of their journey to ‘paradise’. The children gather in a huddle beneath their feet anxiously waiting to hear their story.

My name is Abrafo, meaning warrior and this here is Arapmoi, meaning son of war. We were both born in a small village in the Democratic Republic of Congo. As children, we grew up worry free and full of happiness and joy. My parents had taught me all things right in the world and all things wrong. One thing I had been taught to always think of as wrong was war. To my parents, war was meaningless and pointless. They believed that it was no good for anyone. I, on the other hand did not know what war was or what the big deal behind it was. I had never seen a war before and I had never thought that I would. One day as I was playing in the village with my little brothers the “Abedi” arrived. I had not known what the “Abedi” was but I knew that it meant worshipers. The way they walked through the village with their riffles and their dirty uniforms, seemed to make the air around me polluted. I was not able to breathe, it was as if the oxygen was being sucked from around me. Their air was no doubt different than ours. “Those are the worshipers. They’ve come to recruit us with promises of paradise.” I heard one of the village boys say. As they walked through the village they stopped and noticed my brothers and I. I had no idea what to do. “Should I run? Should I call for my parents? Should I follow them and listen to their promises?” I asked myself. As they passed I looked into one of the “Abedi” member’s eyes. His eyes as if crying out for help looked cold and red and very tired. His body, lifeless as he walked past us. They stood in a circle at the edge of our village near the river and yelled out “Njoo hapa(come here)! Kila vijana ndoto kwa peponi unga sisi (all boys dreaming of paradise join us). Unaweza go kwa nafasi mbali tangu hapa (you can go to a place far from here). Changa (gather)!” Boys began gathering around them, trying to see and hear perfectly what the “Abedi” were saying. My brothers and I stood up and were ready to also hear the news of ‘paradise’ when our parents stepped out of our hut and began pulling us away from the crowd. “But why? Why can’t we listen to the “Abedi” Baba?” I asked my father. He had not answered me but instead kept walking as he pulled my arm. I dragged my feet in the dirt trying to pull away from him. It was no use, he was too strong. I, to stubborn to follow, tried everything to loosen his grip. Once in the hut, my parents explained to me that the “Abedi” were bad people. “Why are they bad Nina?” My youngest brother asked my mother. “We are not sure, but we know that they take young boys of a certain age in each village, recruiting them for a journey to ‘paradise’ but the boys never return home.”

Sci-fi Trailers
by Saeed on October 7th, 2010 in Film Fiction, Science Fiction
Students created trailers about an aspect of science fiction based on the film, A Century of Science Fiction Cinema. Students worked with the same material but arrived at very different results. Some used narration, some chose to create a coherent structure, others had abrupt endings. Through the process of making the trailer they learned how to use Final Cut Pro.

A Century of Science Fiction Cinema
by Saeed on October 7th, 2010 in Film Fiction, Science Fiction
We started the Film Fiction studio by watching To the Galaxy and Beyond with Mark Hamill: A century of Science Fiction Cinema. Students were asked to think about different topics, themes, characters, stories in sci-fi films. Here is a partial list of questions and answers we came up with:
