Alonso and I were tasked with creating a packaging label for our idea, “Direct From Ghana.” The idea focuses on highlighting a story that is very unique to Omanhene, a Ghanaian chocolate company. Unlike other chocolate companies who ship the raw products (cocoa beans) from overseas, Omanhene is the only chocolate company in the world whose chocolate is made in Ghana and every step in producing the chocolate is also done in Ghana. To give more attention to this story of chocolate coming directly from Ghana, we decided to re-design the packaging of the chocolate including the chocolate wrapper and the chocolate box container. We proposed to package the chocolate in a wooden crate-like object to make it appear as if it were shipped from Ghana. The cost for building the box may be on the higher side, so we would need to determine how and when the crate would be used or displayed in stores. Read the rest of this entry »

For the last couple of weeks, I have been collaborating with my NuVu team on a project concerning a chocolate company called Omanhene. What makes Omanhene stand out among other chocolate companies is the way it produces its chocolate. Chocolate is derived from cocoa beans, which can only be grown a certain distance away from the equator, which means there are only a few different countries that can grow them. Most companies buy cocoa beans from these countries and have them shipped to their facilities in the United States where they are processed and packaged into the chocolate bars with which everyone is so familiar. The reason Omanhene is unique is that it is the only chocolate company the produces its chocolate entirely in the country where the cocoa beans are grown. The country in question is a small country located in West Africa called Ghana. Omanhene hires workers in Ghana to pick the beans, ferment them, process them, and have them packaged and then sent to the United States to be sold. Read the rest of this entry »
Bean to Bar Campaign

Our project is called the Bean to Bar campaign. Bean to Bar is a phrase that is used by companies to describe the process in which their chocolate is made. It generally means that the company takes the cocoa beans from one location and produces the entire chocolate bar in another. Omanhene goes one step past this and produces the chocolate in the same place where the cocoa beans are grown. We think Omanhene should make the phrase “Bean to Bar” more widely known because it makes the company unique and sets it apart from others. If we could make “Bean to Bar” a household term that everyone knows, they would begin to care and think about how their food got to their table and understand that the grocery store is only one step of the process.
